This is Baldwin Street.
Baldwin Street...
...is the steepest street in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
...has a slope angle of 38 degrees (35% grade).
...is home to fourteen houses.
...is only 1,150 feet long.
...is one of only seven streets in Dunedin known affectionately as the "Steep 7" by locals.
...is home to the annual "Baldwin Street Gut Buster," an up-and-down race held during the summer. The fastest held time is around two minutes. Racers agree that coming down is much more difficult (and having only walked up and down, I wholeheartedly agree!)
...is also home to an annual event put on by Cadbury (Dunedin is home to one of their main confectioneries). As a fundraiser for charity, small, round, orange candies are numbered and their numbers sponsored by individuals. Then thousands are dumped down the street, taking around fifteen seconds to reach the bottom, with the winner receiving a prize. Fun!
And Baldwin Street...
...was climbed (and conquered!) by yours truly. :)
